The venue should not be confused with The Fillmore Auditorium. Graham began booking shows at The Fillmore Auditorium in December 1965, but due to its limited capacity and the neighborhood’s decline, he took over the Carousel Ballroom at 10 South Van Ness Avenue—approximately one and a half miles from the original Fillmore—renaming it Fillmore West. Fillmore West operated from July 5, 1968, until July 4, 1971. When Bill Graham reopened The Fillmore in the mid-1980s, it was at the original location on Geary Boulevard.
